About

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, released in 1993, is a puzzle game that blends vibrant graphics with strategic gameplay. Players must group beans together to prevent Dr. Robotnik from turning the colorful residents of Beanville into robots. This title stands out for its engaging mechanics and charming aesthetic, offering a fun twist on the classic puzzle genre reminiscent of Puyo Puyo.

When it comes to PC performance, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is quite accessible, running well on entry-level hardware. To achieve stable FPS at suitable graphics settings, a minimum GPU score of around 300 is recommended, making it a great fit for budget systems. With just 1 GB of RAM required, even older PCs can deliver satisfactory performance for this nostalgic title without a hitch.

Given its 63/100 rating, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine may not be a must-play for everyone, but it certainly holds a place in gaming history. If you're a fan of puzzle games or want to explore a classic from the early '90s, it's worth a try to experience its quirky charm.

Performance profile

Released in November 1993, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine predates modern GPU acceleration as we know it today. It runs effortlessly on virtually any current hardware, including integrated graphics and entry-level laptops — framerate is limited by the engine, not the GPU.

Extremely light — Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.

Storyline

Dr. Robotnik has hatched a plan to ensure that no fun or music remains on Mobius. To do this, he kidnaps the jolly citizens of Beanville and stuffs them into a giant roboticizing machine called the Mean Bean-Steaming Machine to turn them into devious little robot-slaves. Across Beanville, Beans disappear and are sent to the Mean Bean Machine. The player sets off on a daring adventure to defeat Robotnik's minions and stop Robotnik. The game ends after a face-off with Robotnik, in which the Mean Bean Machine is destroyed and the Beans are freed. Robotnik's nemesis, Sonic the Hedgehog, is never mentioned throughout the game to rescue or help the player.
