About

"King under the Mountain," released in 2021, is an indie simulation-based settlement-building strategy game that transports players into a rich fantasy world. Players are tasked with transforming a humble colony into a thriving kingdom, navigating complex resource management and strategic growth. The game stands out for its intricate mechanics and deep storytelling, making it a captivating experience for fans of the genre.

When it comes to PC performance, "King under the Mountain" is quite accessible. The game has a minimum GPU requirement of an entry-level model (around a score of 96), which means even budget systems can run it smoothly. With a minimum RAM requirement of 8 GB, players can expect decent FPS at lower graphics settings, making it easy to enjoy the game without needing a high-end rig. For those looking to tackle this game, consider GPUs in the entry-level tier for optimal performance.

If you enjoy indie titles that emphasize strategy and simulation, "King under the Mountain" is definitely worth a play. With strong player ratings and a unique angle on settlement-building, it offers a rewarding experience for anyone interested in crafting their own fantasy kingdom.

Performance profile

Released in November 2021, King under the Mountain targets RTX 20/30-series and RX 6000-era hardware. A current mid-range GPU (RTX 4060 Ti / RX 7700 XT) is the sweet spot for 1440p Ultra; 4K needs a high-end card.

As a strategy title, King under the Mountain is typically CPU-bound rather than GPU-bound — single-thread CPU performance dictates framerate during large-scale battles, end-game saves and late-game AI turns. A fast modern 6-core will help more than a GPU upgrade.

Extremely light — King under the Mountain runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.

Storyline

The game world is built on a series of interlocking systems which combine together to simulate a living, breathing world. As night changes to day, trees and plants will grow (or not) based on sunlight and rainfall. The local environment and changing seasons have effects on the native flora and fauna. Your settlers and other characters have their own personal social and physical needs that you’ll have to fulfill to keep them happy (or at least stop them from breaking and going insane!) It’s an important design goal that it’s possible to play the entire game without getting into armed conflict with other factions (if you choose to). Although weapons and combat can be significant parts of gameplay, we wanted to make sure you can peacefully build up a fully-functioning town to have the satisfaction of sitting back and watching your settlers go about their business in an “art farm” style of play. As well as different ways to build and grow your settlement (do you focus on mining? farming? crafting? buying and selling goods?), in King under the Mountain you can play as several different races and factions each with their own unique gameplay elements. You could build a dwarven fortress dug deep into the side of a mountain, a town of humans at an important river crossing, or a tribe of orcs hunting and raiding others. More than just different races to play as, we want to introduce completely new play styles as unusual factions – perhaps a lone wizard building their secret lair with golems they have constructed, an evil necromancer raising an army of the dead, a dragon amassing a hoard of gold in a giant cave system, or even an invasion of demons attacking the material world.
