About

Mega Man & Bass, released in 1998, is a classic entry in the beloved Mega Man series that allows players to choose between the titular Mega Man or his rival Bass. This action-platformer features tight controls, challenging levels, and iconic boss battles against Dr. Wily's creations. The game is notable not only for its gameplay mechanics but also for its unique narrative twist, as it showcases an unusual alliance between Dr. Wily and Dr. Light to defeat the common foe, King.

For PC gamers looking to run Mega Man & Bass smoothly, the game is quite accessible in terms of hardware requirements. With a minimum GPU requirement of an entry-level graphics card boasting a score around 4047, players can expect solid FPS performance even on modest setups. Players with around 2 GB of RAM will find that the game runs well with lower graphics settings, making it an ideal choice for those who prioritize framerates and performance while enjoying retro gaming.

If you're a fan of classic platformers, Mega Man & Bass is worth playing despite its 70/100 rating. The game's blend of nostalgic charm and challenging gameplay appeals to both new players and series veterans, making it an excellent addition to any PC library focused on benchmark performance and classic gaming experiences.

Performance profile

Released in April 1998, Mega Man & Bass predates modern GPU acceleration as we know it today. It runs effortlessly on virtually any current hardware, including integrated graphics and entry-level laptops — framerate is limited by the engine, not the GPU.

Entry-level hardware target. A GTX 1650 or RX 6500 XT reaches 60 FPS at 1080p Medium in Mega Man & Bass; an RTX 4060 comfortably sustains 1440p Ultra. 4K Ultra 60 FPS needs an RTX 4070 or better.

Storyline

After Mega Man 8, Dr. Wily's whereabouts were still unknown, and he built a new castle to prepare his comeback. But a robot calling himself King appeared planning to conquer the Earth, believed that robots were not meant to simply serve humans, but rather that they were superior and therefore should rule the Earth. King ousted Dr. Wily from his own new castle, and he stole the data of robots created by Dr. Wily and Dr. Light to form his own robot army. To stop King, Dr. Wily and Light made a truce and sent Mega Man and Bass to put a stop to King's rebellion. When King attacked a robot museum to gather its data for his army, Proto Man attempted to stop him, but King cut him in half with his axe and he is sent to Dr. Light's Laboratory for repairs. Mega Man/Bass confronted King, but he withdrew, claiming not to have time for them, and left the Green Devil to take care of them. Mega Man and Bass set out to put a stop to King's plans.
