About
Metal Slug 5, released in 2003, is a classic run-and-gun arcade shooter that continues the beloved franchise's legacy. Players once again join Marco and Tarma as they battle the Ptolemaic Army alongside allies Eri and Fio. With its vibrant 2D graphics and fast-paced gameplay, this installment introduces new mechanics and levels while retaining the beloved charm and humor that Metal Slug is known for.
In terms of PC performance, Metal Slug 5 is quite accessible, making it an excellent choice for gamers with entry-level setups. To achieve smooth gameplay and stable FPS, a GPU with a score of around 200 is recommended alongside a minimum of 1 GB RAM. This means that even modest graphics cards can run the game effectively, allowing players to adjust their graphics settings for an optimal experience without demanding high-end hardware.
With a rating of 80/100, Metal Slug 5 is a solid choice for fans of the genre and newcomers alike. Its blend of cooperative multiplayer action and engaging levels make it worthwhile for anyone seeking nostalgic gameplay with modern accessibility. If you enjoy classic arcade shooters, this title is definitely worth your time.
Performance profile
Released in November 2003, Metal Slug 5 comes from the DirectX 9 era. Even the cheapest modern discrete GPU crushes it at maxed-out settings; the only real bottleneck today is CPU single-thread speed on older titles that were never multi-threaded.
Extremely light — Metal Slug 5 runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.
Storyline
The laboratory developing the next generation of METAL SLUGs comes under attack and a data disk containing METAL SLUG secrets is seized. Marco and Tarma are ordered to retrieve the disc and rush to track it down. Meanwhile, Eri and Fio, who are investigating the paramilitary organization Ptolemaic Army that is raiding historical ruins, succeed in tracking it down at an ancient ruin known as the "Corridor of Fire." They storm the site and attempt to overtake them, but they are repulsed by the natives and giant METAL SLUGs. This incident makes it clear that the enemy behind the pilfering of METAL SLUG secrets is the Ptolemaic Army. The Government Forces decide to carry out a second assault on the "Corridor of Flame" using an elite force of PF Squad and S.P.A.R.R.O.W.S. members to retrieve the secrets and destroy the paramilitary organization!! A special disc that contains deep and intricate secrets about the Metal Slug project is stolen by a mysterious group called the Ptolemaic Army, whose specialty lies from within archaeological excavation and espionage. Marco and Tarma of the Peregrine Falcon Strike Force follow in hot pursuit against the group and in the process are joined by Eri and Fio of SPARROWS. Together once more, the quartet investigate the shrouded objective of the Ptolemaic Army.
