About

Sonic Colors, released in 2010, is a vibrant platforming game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega, it introduces players to a colorful world filled with unique gameplay mechanics that revolve around using "Wisps" to gain special abilities. The game stands out for its engaging level design and accessibility, making it a beloved entry for both newcomers and long-time fans of the franchise.

In terms of PC performance, Sonic Colors is relatively accessible, requiring only an entry-level GPU with a minimum score of around 2533 to achieve enjoyable FPS. Players can expect a smooth gaming experience on systems with at least 8 GB of RAM and a CPU score of approximately 607. For optimal graphics settings and performance, a mid-range GPU from the same era, such as the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 or AMD Radeon HD 7850, can enhance the overall experience with better frame rates and visuals.

Considering its rating of 69/100, Sonic Colors remains a fun choice for platforming enthusiasts, particularly those who enjoy colorful graphics and engaging gameplay. While it may not break new ground in the genre, its charm and accessibility make it a worthwhile play for fans of Sonic and platforming games alike.

Performance profile

November 2010 release. Sonic Colors targets mid-2000s-to-early-2010s hardware — any modern entry-level GPU (GTX 1650 tier or newer integrated graphics) handles it at 1080p Ultra without breaking a sweat.

Entry-level hardware target. A GTX 1650 or RX 6500 XT reaches 60 FPS at 1080p Medium in Sonic Colors; an RTX 4060 comfortably sustains 1440p Ultra. 4K Ultra 60 FPS needs an RTX 4070 or better.

Storyline

The game is centered on the protagonist Sonic the Hedgehog and his fight against the main antagonist of the Sonic series, Dr. Eggman, who has taken an alien race hostage and is using them for his evil purposes. During the game, the camera perspective switches occasionally from third person to side-scrolling. During development, Sega explained that they were delisting sub-standard games in the Sonic series and developing new titles in order to increase the value of the brand. Development included the interchanging perspective, the idea for the game to be set at an amusement park, and a unique music score. Sega revealed that they were developing the game for a wide demographic, which included both older and younger consumers. The game introduces power-ups called Wisps, which the player can use to increase attack power and reach places they cannot otherwise.
