About

The City Must Grow, released in 2021, is a captivating indie simulation and strategy game that challenges players to build and manage a new city on a flat plain. In this early access title, players must ensure continuous development and effective administration to keep their city thriving. Its casual gameplay and unique premise make it a notable entry in the genre, appealing to fans of city-building simulations.

When it comes to PC performance, The City Must Grow is designed to be accessible, requiring only an entry-level GPU with a minimum score of around 200. With just 1 GB of RAM, the game can run smoothly on budget systems, making it a great choice for gamers with basic hardware. Players can expect decent FPS even at lower graphics settings, though a more powerful GPU will enhance the visual experience and overall performance as the city expands.

Should you play The City Must Grow? If you enjoy casual strategy games and are looking for a title that encourages creativity and management skills, this game is worth a try. Its early access status means it may evolve further, but current players have rated it positively for its engaging mechanics and charming design.

Performance profile

Released in December 2021, The City Must Grow targets RTX 20/30-series and RX 6000-era hardware. A current mid-range GPU (RTX 4060 Ti / RX 7700 XT) is the sweet spot for 1440p Ultra; 4K needs a high-end card.

As a strategy title, The City Must Grow is typically CPU-bound rather than GPU-bound — single-thread CPU performance dictates framerate during large-scale battles, end-game saves and late-game AI turns. A fast modern 6-core will help more than a GPU upgrade.

Extremely light — The City Must Grow runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.

Storyline

Your role in this game is to determine where the buildings and structures in the city can be built. Time and moves in the game are turn based. Each move is given random zoning type to mark on the map. After you mark zones, you move on to the next cycle and observe the developments in the city. You can unlock more advanced types of buildings and structures by completing in-game objectives. Completing objectives also allows you to open different map view tools that will make management easier. There are four main types of zones you manage; residential, agricultural, commercial and industrial. You need to constantly try to manage the distance between the zones, the density and the balance between them correctly. Otherwise, escapes from the city may begin, unused buildings may collapse on their own, and the city may collapse with a chain effect. The main aim of the game is to keep the administration in your hands as long as possible by ensuring the continuous development of the city and to reach a high population. Stopping city development is part of the game. It's up to you to try again and again to find the best way to keep the city constantly grow.
