About

Twisted Metal: Black, released in 2001, is a vehicle combat video game that stands out in the genre for its dark themes and intense multiplayer battles. Developed by Incognito Entertainment, this fifth installment in the beloved Twisted Metal series encourages players to engage in explosive car combat across a variety of uniquely designed environments. The gameplay features a mix of strategic driving and weapon management, making it a memorable title for fans of chaotic vehicular action.

When considering PC performance for Twisted Metal: Black, the game is quite accessible. With minimum GPU requirements at a baseline entry-level GPU, players can expect satisfactory performance even on less powerful systems. To achieve smooth gameplay with respectable frame rates (FPS), it's advisable to target GPUs that score around 300 or higher, providing the necessary power to handle the graphics settings without strain.

If you're a fan of competitive gameplay and vehicle-based action, Twisted Metal: Black is worth your time, especially considering its respectable rating of 81/100. Given its engaging gameplay and nostalgic value, it's a great title to revisit or experience for the first time, especially if you enjoy benchmarks that showcase its performance on modern hardware.

Performance profile

Released in June 2001, Twisted Metal: Black comes from the DirectX 9 era. Even the cheapest modern discrete GPU crushes it at maxed-out settings; the only real bottleneck today is CPU single-thread speed on older titles that were never multi-threaded.

Extremely light — Twisted Metal: Black runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.

Storyline

Black is on a mission for another person to locate and murder Calypso. However the person who sent him has never before been seen and it is never revealed why exactly he is carrying out this mission. According to the original Twisted Metal created in the year 1995, in TM:B the entire storyline is darker, and is referred to as an "alternate universe," in comparison to the other Twisted Metal games. As stated, it is because it is all in Needles Kane's head. But there is even more to TM:B. Black, the driver of Manslaughter, made an appearance in TM(1995), Darkside's driver Mr. Ash's "lost" ending. In that ending he wants his demon "black" back, which makes one believe Mr. Ash is Satan. When he gets Black back, Calypso gets very upset. This is because Black is sent on a mission to kill a darker, more evil Calypso in the "Black" universe.
