About

UFO: Afterlight, released in 2006, is a squad-based tactical strategy-RPG that builds upon the legacy of the original X-COM games while introducing its own unique post-apocalyptic horror narrative. Players manage a colony on Mars, engaging in tactical combat that blends real-time action with the ability to pause and plan their next moves. This isometric 3D game offers layers of depth and strategy, making it a notable entry in the indie genre.

In terms of PC performance, UFO: Afterlight is quite accessible, requiring only an entry-level GPU with a minimum score of approximately 36 to achieve playable FPS. With just 1 GB of RAM, gamers looking to play this title won't need high-end hardware to enjoy smooth gameplay. Benchmark tests indicate that even older graphics cards can run the game effectively on lower graphics settings, ensuring a decent performance for most players.

Despite its average rating of 63/100, UFO: Afterlight offers a distinctive experience for fans of strategy and indie games. If you appreciate tactical gameplay and the vibes of classic RPGs, it's worth a try, especially for those who enjoy a blend of combat and storytelling on moderate hardware.

Performance profile

Released in December 2006, UFO: Afterlight comes from the DirectX 9 era. Even the cheapest modern discrete GPU crushes it at maxed-out settings; the only real bottleneck today is CPU single-thread speed on older titles that were never multi-threaded.

As a strategy title, UFO: Afterlight is typically CPU-bound rather than GPU-bound — single-thread CPU performance dictates framerate during large-scale battles, end-game saves and late-game AI turns. A fast modern 6-core will help more than a GPU upgrade.

Extremely light — UFO: Afterlight runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.

Storyline

The story is situated on Mars. It starts where UFO: Aftermath left off and runs simultaneously with UFO: Aftershock. While the Laputans on Earth are fighting Wargots and Starghosts and finding out what caused the destruction of their home planet, a small colony on Mars is trying to survive and flourish. The player will gain more details about the activities of intergalactic organisms, called Myrmecols, in the solar system. The scientific research and communication with different factions on the Earth gives him a different perspective on the events of the two previous sequels. In UFO: Afterlight, the players will meet with brand new technologies, unusual environment and enemies both old and unknown.
