About

Phobos, released in 1992, is a notable visual novel set in a captivating cyberpunk world. Developed by Himeya Soft for the PC-98, it combines engaging storytelling with interactive gameplay, allowing players to navigate complex narrative paths influenced by their choices. This game stands out for its unique art style and immersive atmosphere, elements that have earned it a place in the hearts of retro gaming enthusiasts.

In terms of PC performance, Phobos is quite accessible, requiring only an entry-level GPU with a minimum score of around 300 to achieve smooth gameplay. With a modest RAM requirement of just 1 GB, players can expect stable FPS even on lower-tier systems. While the graphics settings are not demanding, using a GPU from today's budget-friendly range will ensure a pleasant experience while allowing the game’s visuals to shine through.

If you're a fan of visual novels or cyberpunk narratives, Phobos is definitely worth your time. Its compelling story and low system requirements make it an excellent choice for retro gaming fans or those looking to explore the early days of interactive storytelling.

Performance profile

Released in July 1992, Phobos predates modern GPU acceleration as we know it today. It runs effortlessly on virtually any current hardware, including integrated graphics and entry-level laptops — framerate is limited by the engine, not the GPU.

RPGs like Phobos stress VRAM during long sessions — texture streaming, mods and open-world traversal inflate memory use over time. 8 GB VRAM is a practical floor; 12 GB+ is worth the headroom at 1440p and above.

Extremely light — Phobos runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.

Storyline

In the future, mankind successfully colonized Mars. However, the colonists eventually wished to be independent from Earth's control, and as a result a war began. Martian colonists used armored combat androids in battles. Eventually an uneasy truce was achieved, but Martian economy was badly damaged by war, and the planet became de facto dependent on Earth to survive. Half a year later, a young Tokyo-based private investigator named Ryuuichi and his assistant, the android Leyla, are contacted by the colonel of the former colonial army of Mars. It appears that someone has stolen documents containing top military secrets and disappeared with them. Ryuuichi is asked to find that man, whom he knew quite well during the years of war...
