About

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004) is an action-adventure game that defined open-world gaming for a generation. You play as Carl Johnson, returning to his hometown of Los Santos to reclaim control of the streets while navigating a story filled with crime and corruption across the fictional state of San Andreas. The game remains notable for its massive map, engaging narrative, and freedom to approach missions in multiple ways.

San Andreas runs exceptionally well on modern hardware, making it one of the most accessible titles for benchmarking. Even modest GPUs can push well over 100 FPS at 1080p with maxed graphics settings, while older or integrated graphics still deliver playable performance. This makes it ideal for testing baseline performance or comparing GPU benchmarks across different hardware generations without demanding high-end specifications.

With a strong 90/100 rating and timeless gameplay, San Andreas is absolutely worth playing if you enjoy action games with meaningful narratives. Its legendary status in gaming history combined with its low performance demands makes it a perfect entry point for PC gaming or revisiting a classic.

Performance profile

Released in October 2004, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas comes from the DirectX 9 era. Even the cheapest modern discrete GPU crushes it at maxed-out settings; the only real bottleneck today is CPU single-thread speed on older titles that were never multi-threaded.

Action titles like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas reward high framerates for visual clarity during combat. A mid-range modern GPU at 1440p 60–120 FPS is the practical sweet spot; VRR (G-Sync/FreeSync) smooths out drops during heavy effects.

Extremely light — Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.

Storyline

Five years ago, Carl Johnson escaped from the pressures of life in Los Santos, San Andreas, a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs and corruption. Where filmstars and millionaires do their best to avoid the dealers and gangbangers. Now, it’s the early 90’s. Carl’s got to go home. His mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster. On his return to the neighborhood, a couple of corrupt cops frame him for homicide. CJ is forced on a journey that takes him across the entire state of San Andreas, to save his family and to take control of the streets.
