About

Planescape: Torment, released in 1999, is a critically acclaimed computer role-playing game (CRPG) set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. The game's narrative revolves around The Nameless One, an immortal amnesiac who embarks on a quest across various planes to uncover his identity and confront the traumatic events of his past. Renowned for its deep storytelling and rich character interactions, Planescape: Torment stands out not only as a classic RPG but also as a compelling puzzle and strategy game that challenges players on multiple levels.

In terms of PC performance, Planescape: Torment is relatively accessible for most systems, requiring only entry-level GPUs to run smoothly. With a minimum GPU score of around 300, players will be able to enjoy the game at playable FPS rates even on lower-end hardware. This allows a wide range of users to experience its intricate graphics settings without needing high-performance components, making it an ideal choice for gamers with varying systems.

Given its impressive rating of 89/100, Planescape: Torment is a must-play for fans of immersive RPGs and narrative-driven games. The blend of philosophical themes and rich gameplay provide an engaging experience that resonates with both newcomers and seasoned players alike. If you appreciate a deep story and complex character development, this game deserves a spot in your library.

Performance profile

Released in December 1999, Planescape: Torment predates modern GPU acceleration as we know it today. It runs effortlessly on virtually any current hardware, including integrated graphics and entry-level laptops — framerate is limited by the engine, not the GPU.

As a strategy title, Planescape: Torment is typically CPU-bound rather than GPU-bound — single-thread CPU performance dictates framerate during large-scale battles, end-game saves and late-game AI turns. A fast modern 6-core will help more than a GPU upgrade.

Extremely light — Planescape: Torment runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.

Storyline

The game's story begins when The Nameless One wakes up in a mortuary. He is immediately approached by a floating skull, Morte, who offers advice on how to escape. Morte also reads the tattoos written on The Nameless One's back, which were inked there as reminders to himself, that contain instructions to find a man named Pharod. After a conversation with the ghost of his former lover, Deionarra, and passing by various undead, The Nameless One leaves the mortuary to explore the slums of Sigil.
