About
Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is a 2020 action game that blends combat and farming simulation in a unique way. Players control Sakuna, a harvest goddess armed with farm tools and a magical celestial scarf, as she battles demons across a dangerous island while gradually building up her rice farm. The game combines side-scrolling action with deep resource management mechanics, creating a surprisingly engaging blend that earned it a solid 90/100 rating.
The game is quite accessible from a PC performance standpoint and won't demand high-end hardware. With minimum CPU requirements around 5237 score and a modest 6 GB RAM requirement, entry-level GPUs with scores near 3900 can handle the game smoothly. Even older systems should achieve solid FPS performance at standard graphics settings, making this an excellent benchmark title for testing budget gaming rigs or older GPUs without expecting demanding frame rate targets.
If you enjoy games that mix genres and aren't afraid of a little farming alongside your combat, Sakuna is absolutely worth playing. Its strong critical reception and unique gameplay loop make it a standout indie title that runs great on accessible hardware.
Performance profile
Released in November 2020, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin targets RTX 20/30-series and RX 6000-era hardware. A current mid-range GPU (RTX 4060 Ti / RX 7700 XT) is the sweet spot for 1440p Ultra; 4K needs a high-end card.
Simulation titles like Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin are heavily CPU-dependent — physics, AI and world state dominate the frame budget. Prioritise a CPU with strong single-thread performance and fast RAM over raw GPU power.
Entry-level hardware target. A GTX 1650 or RX 6500 XT reaches 60 FPS at 1080p Medium in Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin; an RTX 4060 comfortably sustains 1440p Ultra. 4K Ultra 60 FPS needs an RTX 4070 or better.
Storyline
Long ago, the spoiled Princess Sakuna enjoyed a life of leisure in the Mihashira Capital among the gods and spirits of Yanato. But on the floating bridge of heaven separating the immortal Lofty Realm from the Lowly Realm of mortals, a chance encounter with the children of men (or, as they call themselves, the humans) led to a series of mishaps. Alas, this culminated in their banishment to Hinoe Island, the so-called Isle of Demons. The ruling deity, Lady Kamuhitsuki, charged Sakuna with securing a foothold for the capital and rooting out the hordes of demonic beasts that plague the island. And, of course, as a goddess she must also look after the wayward children of men who were alongside her. But even a goddess needs to eat, and so the tale of rice and ruin begins... Sakuna may have begun her story as a spoiled princess, but over the course of her journey she will come into her own as the true successor to her exalted parents, Lady Toyohana the harvest goddess and Lord Takeribi the warrior god. As she explores the beautiful yet forbidding environments of Hinoe Island, she will also find a home in a mountain village, proving herself worthy of her title by harvesting rice and bettering the lives of humanity.
