About

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl (2024) is an unforgiving first-person survival adventure set in a dark science-fiction open world. The game blends action, exploration, and RPG mechanics as you scavenge for gear, make hard decisions under pressure, and navigate through the anomalous Chornobyl Zone. It's a narrative-driven experience that prioritizes immersion and player choice in a hostile, atmospheric environment.

This is a demanding title that requires solid hardware to run smoothly. Entry-level GPUs with scores around 7478 represent the bare minimum, but you'll want a mid-range GPU for stable 60 FPS performance at moderate graphics settings. With 16 GB RAM and a CPU score of roughly 1301, the game scales well across different configurations, allowing you to tweak resolution, ray-tracing, and texture quality to hit your target FPS. Benchmark testing across various GPU tiers will help you find the right balance between visual fidelity and performance.

With an 81/100 rating, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 delivers a compelling experience for fans of atmospheric survival games and hardcore FPS enthusiasts. If you enjoy challenging, immersive worlds with meaningful consequences, this is worth playing.

Performance profile

November 2024 release. As a current-generation title, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl pushes modern hardware — expect to need an RTX 40-series or RX 7000-series GPU to enjoy it at native 4K Ultra without leaning on upscaling.

RPGs like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl stress VRAM during long sessions — texture streaming, mods and open-world traversal inflate memory use over time. 8 GB VRAM is a practical floor; 12 GB+ is worth the headroom at 1440p and above.

Mid-range territory. An RTX 3060 or RX 6700 XT delivers 60 FPS at 1080p High in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. For 1440p Ultra you'll want an RTX 4060 Ti / RX 7700 XT; 4K Ultra needs an RTX 4070 Ti or faster.

Storyline

Yevhen "Skif" Martynenko, a veteran of the Ukrainian Marine Corps, has returned from a 3-year deployment in an unspecified conflict. He awakens to find his apartment has been destroyed by an anomaly that has mysteriously appeared outside of the Zone, leaving an unknown artifact in its wake. Looking to earn money for a new home, he is smuggled into the Zone by a scientist, Professor Hermann, along with a piece of technology called the 'Scanner' that creates local anomalies and can apparently "recharge" depleted artifacts. Venturing into the Zone, he finds his initial team he was to make contact with have been killed and sets out alone to use the Scanner in special coordinates where it works. On the third and successful attempt, he is interrupted by an investigation from soldiers of the faction called 'Ward', dedicated to controlling the Zone and stopping its expansion. The soldiers themselves are killed by an unknown third party, who steal Skif's belongings and knock him unconscious. Skif awakens and sets out to recover the Scanner and artifact, aided by a friendly loner named Richter. He finds himself on the trail of Solder, who sold him and the scientists the coordinates of where to place the Scanner, collaborating with either the local Stalkers or the Ward in the process. Following the trail, he is led to Scar, the protagonist of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky, who leads an anarchistic faction called Spark that opposes the Ward and believes the Zone can be transformed into a utopian 'Shining Zone', as well as the Noontide faction, consisting of the formerly-brainwashed soldiers of the Monolith from previous games, who seek to make their own lives, having no memory of their pre-zone life or enslavement to the Monolith. They are divided between Strider, who aims to make the Zone a safer place, and Faust, who still preaches the original mindset of the Monolith.
