About

The Donnerwald Experiment (2019) is an indie RPG that blends fantasy and horror elements into a gripping storyline about self-discovery and survival. Players take on the role of Johanna, who is grappling with the dire consequences of being infected by a Dream Demon. This unique premise, combined with Lovecraftian aesthetics and thought-provoking narratives, sets it apart in the early access gaming space.

In terms of PC performance, The Donnerwald Experiment is quite accessible. With a minimum GPU requirement that scores around 472, even entry-level graphics cards can handle the game reasonably well. Players looking for smoother gameplay and higher FPS should consider mid-range GPUs to fully enjoy the game’s graphical settings. As with many RPGs, having at least 4 GB of RAM is essential for decent performance, making it manageable for most modern systems.

If you're intrigued by dark narratives and RPG mechanics, The Donnerwald Experiment is worth exploring. Its indie charm and inventive storyline have garnered a positive response from players and critics alike, making it a notable entry for fans of the genre who are looking to experience something different.

Performance profile

October 2019 release. The Donnerwald Experiment was built around the GTX 10-series / RX Vega era. Current-gen mid-range cards (RTX 4060 / RX 7600) are overkill at 1080p and handle 1440p Ultra comfortably.

RPGs like The Donnerwald Experiment stress VRAM during long sessions — texture streaming, mods and open-world traversal inflate memory use over time. 8 GB VRAM is a practical floor; 12 GB+ is worth the headroom at 1440p and above.

Extremely light — The Donnerwald Experiment runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.

Storyline

An endless nightmare awaits Johanna Prokuri! She was once a prodigy, capable of creating powerful automatons and other machines. But three years ago, an accident happened during an experiment which resulted in the loss of her creativity. Since then, she's been struggling to develop new ideas. One day a charming mole named Montgomery appears in her dreams. He warns her that a Dream Demon "infected" her during the experiment, the loss of her creativity is just one of the symptoms and she's about to turn into a monster soon. Now the duo is hunting Dream Demons together and try to find a way to get rid of her disease before it's too late.
