About
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel is a 2013 JRPG that kicks off the Erebonia arc in the long-running Trails series. The game follows Rean Schwarzer and his classmates at Thors Military Academy, a diverse group mixing nobility with commoners in a newly formed class. It's known for its deep character development, engaging turn-based combat, and sprawling narrative that defined the series for many fans.
This game is highly accessible from a PC performance standpoint and doesn't demand cutting-edge hardware. An entry-level GPU with a benchmark score around 479 is sufficient for solid FPS performance, and just 4 GB of RAM covers the minimum requirements. You can comfortably run this title on older or budget graphics cards while maintaining smooth gameplay at decent graphical settings, making it an excellent benchmark baseline for lower-end system testing.
If you enjoy character-driven JRPGs with thoughtful storytelling, Trails of Cold Steel's 82/100 rating makes it worth playing. The accessible performance requirements mean almost any PC gamer can experience this acclaimed entry point into the Erebonia saga.
Performance profile
Released in September 2013, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel sits in the DirectX 11 generation. Comfortable on any modern mid-range GPU at 1440p; even an RTX 3050 or RX 6600 typically delivers 4K60 at High settings.
RPGs like The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel stress VRAM during long sessions — texture streaming, mods and open-world traversal inflate memory use over time. 8 GB VRAM is a practical floor; 12 GB+ is worth the headroom at 1440p and above.
Extremely light — The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.
Storyline
Among the nations on the Zemurian continent, the mighty Erebonian Empire has been quick to outwardly stake its claim militarily; yet politically, ugly bouts of internal conflict between the upper class and commoners attempting to rise to power have been steadily intensifying day by day. The Noble and Reformist Factions have been none too kind to one another over the years, and tensions between the two only stand to worsen if compromises aren’t made in the very near future. Rean Schwarzer, like any other citizen of the Imperial Nation, is no stranger to these rising conflicts: the class system has been deeply embedded into the hearts of every Erebonian since the days of old. As a seventeen-year-old student preparing for his new life at Thors Military Academy, however, he notices that his crimson uniform differs from the standard ones issued to his peers—typically green for commoners, and white for nobles. Enter, Class VII of Thors Military Academy. For the first time in the prestigious academy’s history, rank means nothing and skill means everything. With nine hand-picked students of various backgrounds and abilities, Rean included, Class VII readies itself to dive deep into the political quagmire that threatens not only them, but the Empire as a whole.
