About

The Temple of Elemental Evil, released in 2003, is a classic computer role-playing game that draws inspiration from Dungeons & Dragons. Players start in the town of Hommlet and experience a dynamic narrative influenced by their party's alignment. The game is notable for its turn-based combat mechanics and rich storytelling, transporting gamers to a fantasy world filled with intricate quests and strategic battles.

When it comes to PC performance, The Temple of Elemental Evil is quite accessible. The game's minimum requirement is an entry-level GPU, scoring around 300, making it manageable even for budget-friendly setups. For optimal FPS, players should consider mid-range GPUs, which can provide smoother graphics settings and enhance the gaming experience without demanding overly high specifications. Benchmarks show that even older hardware can run it adequately, ensuring a consistent and enjoyable performance.

Considering its rating of 73/100, The Temple of Elemental Evil is worth playing, especially for fans of the RPG genre and Dungeons & Dragons enthusiasts. While its graphics may seem dated, the engaging gameplay and strategic depth still resonate with many players today.

Performance profile

Released in September 2003, The Temple of Elemental Evil comes from the DirectX 9 era. Even the cheapest modern discrete GPU crushes it at maxed-out settings; the only real bottleneck today is CPU single-thread speed on older titles that were never multi-threaded.

RPGs like The Temple of Elemental Evil stress VRAM during long sessions — texture streaming, mods and open-world traversal inflate memory use over time. 8 GB VRAM is a practical floor; 12 GB+ is worth the headroom at 1440p and above.

Extremely light — The Temple of Elemental Evil runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.

Storyline

Thirteen years before the start of the game, Hommlet was a peaceful town. Due to low taxes and safe roads, the area became prosperous, and the village flourished. This prosperity drew the attention of evil forces, who began slowly trickling into the area. It is not known where these forces came from, but the Dyvers of Nyr Dyv and the inhabitants of the forestlands of the Wild Coast were the chief suspects. As the presence of bandits, kobolds, and goblins increased, a local militia led by Waldgraf of Ostverk was raised to defend Hommlet. This only served to check the evil forces, however.
