About

Urtuk: The Desolation, released in 2021, is an engaging open-world tactical turn-based RPG set in a low-fantasy universe. Players guide their band of adventurers through the remnants of an ancient world, making strategic decisions, recruiting allies, and looting fallen foes. Its unique blend of RPG elements and strategic gameplay sets it apart, providing an immersive experience in a harsh and unforgiving environment.

When it comes to performance, Urtuk is quite accessible with minimal system requirements that cater to a broad audience. It needs only an entry-level GPU with a minimum score of around 200, which means users can expect playable FPS on lower-end hardware. For optimal performance, consider GPUs in the mid-range tier, as they allow for smoother gameplay even at higher graphics settings, ensuring a more enjoyable experience while exploring the game's vast landscapes.

With a solid rating of 80/100, Urtuk: The Desolation is a compelling choice for fans of the RPG and strategy genres. Its engaging mechanics and immersive world make it worth playing, especially for those who appreciate tactical gameplay and don’t mind a bit of challenge in their adventures.

Performance profile

Released in February 2021, Urtuk: The Desolation targets RTX 20/30-series and RX 6000-era hardware. A current mid-range GPU (RTX 4060 Ti / RX 7700 XT) is the sweet spot for 1440p Ultra; 4K needs a high-end card.

As a strategy title, Urtuk: The Desolation is typically CPU-bound rather than GPU-bound — single-thread CPU performance dictates framerate during large-scale battles, end-game saves and late-game AI turns. A fast modern 6-core will help more than a GPU upgrade.

Extremely light — Urtuk: The Desolation runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.

Storyline

The game world is a place of toil, suffering and darkness. There are no elves, dwarfs, dragons or other classical fantasy creatures. There are some light magical elements, but no overwhelmingly powerful sorcerers either. Many centuries past, Giants roamed the world, living peacefully alongside humans until the war between the two species left the Giants extinct. Some years ago, a cabal of scientists discovered a process to extract the Life Essence of the ancient Giants from their bones. This mystical fluid promised to cure many different diseases, mend grievous wounds, and perhaps even halt the aging process. Unfortunately, instead of improving the health of the subject, very often the serum would have the opposite effect, inflicting a mutation or lethal disease. Until the exact nature of this wondrous medicine can be determined, experiments on unwilling subjects continue. The story begins when the main character, Urtuk, escapes from the Sanatorium, a facility where these experiments are carried out on abducted commoners. Urtuk suffered a severe mutation from his exposure to the Life Essence, and with every passing day his health worsens. Now he wanders the world in search of a cure. Unless he can find a way to counter his evolving mutation, Urtuk must eventually die.
