About

What the Duck, released in 2023, is an engaging Action and Adventure RPG that sets players on a whimsical journey in a world where individuals can summon their spiritual animals. Players take on the role of a character accompanied by a duckling, navigating through a vibrant world filled with exciting challenges and captivating quests. Its unique premise and charming visuals make it notable in the indie gaming scene, offering a fresh perspective on traditional RPG mechanics.

When it comes to PC performance, What the Duck is designed to be accessible, requiring only an entry-level GPU with a minimum score of around 1759. Players with at least 4 GB of RAM can expect solid gameplay without needing high-end hardware. Benchmark tests suggest that even those using mid-range GPUs can achieve a consistent FPS, allowing players to experience the game’s colorful graphics settings without significant lag or stuttering.

If you enjoy quirky indie titles that blend humor and adventure, then What the Duck is worth considering. With positive reviews highlighting its engaging gameplay and charming aesthetics, it stands out as a delightful experience that captures the essence of both action and RPG genres.

Performance profile

November 2023 release. As a current-generation title, What the Duck pushes modern hardware — expect to need an RTX 40-series or RX 7000-series GPU to enjoy it at native 4K Ultra without leaning on upscaling.

RPGs like What the Duck stress VRAM during long sessions — texture streaming, mods and open-world traversal inflate memory use over time. 8 GB VRAM is a practical floor; 12 GB+ is worth the headroom at 1440p and above.

Extremely light — What the Duck runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.

Storyline

Illy and The Duckling joins forces with Hellen Drunkren, a young and smart inventor, whose spiritual animal is a charming chameleon. Together, they will go on a journey about revenge and self acceptance. Gameplay The core gameplay consists in combat, exploration and crafting. The player will explore seven different open areas, in which he will find enemies to battle with hack and slash elements, traditional RPG quests to do, puzzles to solve and a lot of exploration, some of it focused on The Duckling. Rhymesmith Another spotlight of the game is the weapon crafting system, called Rhymesmith. The hero craft its own weapons in the game. Since he doesn’t have any idea on how to do it, the character will have to learn as any normal person: watching video tutorials on the internet. The idea of the system is that you are watching a tutorial on Duck Tube and have to reproduce what the Blacksmith does. Mechanically it works as a rhythm game. Craft creative weapons like the RainBow.
