About

X: Beyond the Frontier, released in 1999, is a renowned simulation and strategy game that marks the beginning of the expansive X-Universe series developed by Egosoft. Players navigate the cosmos in the Experimental Shuttle, taking on the role of Kyle Brennan as he seeks to repopulate the stars. The game's intricate storyline combined with its open-world space exploration and trading mechanics makes it a unique entry in the genre, particularly for fans of deep space simulation.

In terms of PC performance, X: Beyond the Frontier is relatively accessible, requiring only an entry-level GPU with a minimum score of approximately 50 to run smoothly. Players with systems equipped with at least 32 GB of RAM can expect a stable experience, with FPS benchmarks indicating that even mid-range graphics cards can deliver satisfactory performance. For optimal settings, players should aim for GPUs in the mid or upper tiers to ensure enhanced visuals and fluid gameplay, especially during intense scenarios.

Considering its 76/100 rating, X: Beyond the Frontier is definitely worth playing for enthusiasts of simulation and strategy games. Its engaging narrative and gameplay mechanics provide a compelling experience for those who enjoy intricate space exploration, making it a classic in the genre that still resonates with players today.

Performance profile

Released in July 1999, X: Beyond the Frontier predates modern GPU acceleration as we know it today. It runs effortlessly on virtually any current hardware, including integrated graphics and entry-level laptops — framerate is limited by the engine, not the GPU.

As a strategy title, X: Beyond the Frontier is typically CPU-bound rather than GPU-bound — single-thread CPU performance dictates framerate during large-scale battles, end-game saves and late-game AI turns. A fast modern 6-core will help more than a GPU upgrade.

Extremely light — X: Beyond the Frontier runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.

Storyline

Forcing us to lay a trap to protect Earth and exiling the Human race to stay on Earth once again. 500 Years later Kyle Brennan starts his journey by piloting an experimental ship equipped with a new piece of technology allowing it to cross vast distances on its own. However it malfunctions and traps him in a group of sectors inhabited by Aliens, hunted and with no way home, this is his story of survival... Beyond the Frontier...
