About
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (1997) is a legendary action-RPG that blends platforming with role-playing mechanics in a Gothic castle setting. You play as Alucard, wielding vampiric powers, weapons, and magical relics to battle darkness while uncovering hidden areas and secrets throughout the expansive map. The game's blend of combat, exploration, and progression made it a landmark title that defined the "Metroidvania" subgenre.
Performance-wise, Symphony of the Night is extremely accessible on modern PCs and demands minimal GPU resources. Even budget integrated graphics or entry-level dedicated GPUs will handle this game smoothly, easily delivering 60+ FPS at native resolution with maximum graphics settings. You'll find detailed FPS benchmarks across various GPU tiers on our database, but realistically, any gaming PC from the last decade will run this without breaking a sweat. Hardware requirements are so light that you can safely ignore performance concerns entirely.
With a 92/100 rating and timeless gameplay, Symphony of the Night remains essential for action-RPG fans and anyone interested in gaming history. If you enjoy exploration-heavy adventures with solid combat mechanics, this classic absolutely deserves a spot in your library.
Performance profile
Released in March 1997, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night predates modern GPU acceleration as we know it today. It runs effortlessly on virtually any current hardware, including integrated graphics and entry-level laptops — framerate is limited by the engine, not the GPU.
RPGs like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night stress VRAM during long sessions — texture streaming, mods and open-world traversal inflate memory use over time. 8 GB VRAM is a practical floor; 12 GB+ is worth the headroom at 1440p and above.
Extremely light — Castlevania: Symphony of the Night runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.
Storyline
The game's story takes place during the year 1797, 5 years after the events of Rondo of Blood and begins with Richter Belmont's defeat of Count Dracula, mirroring the end of the former game. However, despite Dracula being defeated, Richter vanishes without a trace. Castlevania rises again five years later, and while there are no Belmonts to storm the castle, Alucard, the son of Dracula, awakens from his self-induced sleep, and decides to investigate what transpired during his slumber. Meanwhile, Maria Renard, Richter's sister-in-law, enters Castlevania herself to search for the missing Richter. She assists Alucard multiple times throughout the game.
