About

Caves of Qud is a science fantasy roguelike that blends deep simulation with procedural generation to create an incredibly flexible adventure. Released in 2024, this indie RPG stands out for its retro-futuristic aesthetic, complex character creation system with over 70 mutations and defects, and a world packed with sentient plants and intricate social systems. You can approach objectives in countless ways, making each playthrough unique and highly replayable.

Performance-wise, Caves of Qud is exceptionally accessible and doesn't demand high-end hardware to run smoothly. With just 4 GB RAM minimum, most modern GPUs will handle this game with ease, easily hitting 60+ FPS on medium to high graphics settings even on budget cards. The benchmark testing shows that older mid-range GPUs and integrated graphics can comfortably achieve playable framerates, making it ideal for laptops and lower-end systems. You won't need to compromise much on graphics settings to enjoy solid performance.

If you enjoy strategic RPGs with deep mechanics and aren't bothered by retro aesthetics, Caves of Qud is absolutely worth your time. Its 82/100 rating reflects a richly crafted experience that rewards experimentation and exploration, backed by excellent performance across a wide range of PC configurations.

Performance profile

December 2024 release. As a current-generation title, Caves of Qud pushes modern hardware — expect to need an RTX 40-series or RX 7000-series GPU to enjoy it at native 4K Ultra without leaning on upscaling.

As a strategy title, Caves of Qud is typically CPU-bound rather than GPU-bound — single-thread CPU performance dictates framerate during large-scale battles, end-game saves and late-game AI turns. A fast modern 6-core will help more than a GPU upgrade.

Extremely light — Caves of Qud runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.

Storyline

Come inhabit an exotic world and chisel through layers of thousand-year-old civilizations. Decide: is it a dying earth, or is it on the verge of rebirth? Play the role of a mutant indigenous to the salt-spangled dunes and jungles of Qud, or play a pure-strain descendant from one of the few remaining eco-domes - the toxic arboreta of Ekuemekiyye, the Holy City; the ice-sheathed arcology of Ibul; or the crustal mortars of Yawningmoon. Follow the plot to Barathrum the Old, a sentient cave bear who leads a sect of tinkers intent on restoring technological splendor to Qud. There’s a story in every nook, from legendary items with fabled pasts to in-game history books written by plant historians. A novel’s worth of handwritten lore is knit into a procedurally-generated history that’s unique each game.
