About

"Captive," released in 1990, is a unique blend of adventure and strategy genres that immerses players in a compelling quest for freedom. Players take on the role of a character trapped in a space prison for a crime they did not commit, using only a briefcase computer to send out distress signals and navigate through this electronic confinement. The game’s narrative and gameplay mechanics make it notable among classic titles, setting the stage for a thoughtful exploration of identity and survival.

When considering PC performance for "Captive," the game's demands are relatively minimal, making it accessible to a wide range of hardware. With an entry-level GPU that achieves a minimum score of around 400, players can expect smooth fps performance on basic setups. A system equipped with at least 4 GB of RAM is recommended to ensure an optimal gaming experience, allowing you to adjust graphics settings and improve overall performance without hiccups.

If you appreciate cerebral puzzles and engaging storylines, "Captive" comes highly recommended despite its age. With its intriguing premise and strategic gameplay, it's well worth exploring, especially for fans of adventure games seeking a nostalgic journey into the past.

Performance profile

Released in December 1990, Captive predates modern GPU acceleration as we know it today. It runs effortlessly on virtually any current hardware, including integrated graphics and entry-level laptops — framerate is limited by the engine, not the GPU.

As a strategy title, Captive is typically CPU-bound rather than GPU-bound — single-thread CPU performance dictates framerate during large-scale battles, end-game saves and late-game AI turns. A fast modern 6-core will help more than a GPU upgrade.

Extremely light — Captive runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.

Storyline

Trill, the main character, is judged guilty (indicted for a crime he did not commit) and ordered in a space cryogenic prison for 250 years. 248 years later, he awakes, but without the memory of who he is, where he is and why he was imprisoned. In the corner of his cell, which had doubled as a store-room, the prisoner finds a "briefcase computer" which gives him control over a group of four droids on a space ship. Now he must use these droids to find and free himself.
