About

"Cold War," released in 2005, immerses players in an action-packed narrative where you step into the shoes of freelance journalist Matt Carter. As you navigate through intense situations involving weapon thefts and gadget improvisation, the gripping storyline unfolds within the high-stakes atmosphere of a KGB prison, making it a notable entry in the action genre despite its average rating of 50/100.

When considering PC performance, "Cold War" is relatively accessible compared to more modern titles, requiring only an entry-level GPU with a minimum score of around 171 to achieve playable frame rates. Players can expect acceptable FPS even on low to mid-range systems, allowing for enjoyable gameplay without the need for high-end graphics setups. Optimizing graphics settings can further enhance performance, catering to a broader range of gaming rigs.

Should you invest your time in "Cold War"? Given its mediocre rating, potential players may want to temper their expectations. However, if you're a fan of action games with a deep narrative and don't mind some dated graphics, this title can still offer an entertaining experience for those interested in the genre.

Performance profile

Released in September 2005, Cold War comes from the DirectX 9 era. Even the cheapest modern discrete GPU crushes it at maxed-out settings; the only real bottleneck today is CPU single-thread speed on older titles that were never multi-threaded.

Action titles like Cold War reward high framerates for visual clarity during combat. A mid-range modern GPU at 1440p 60–120 FPS is the practical sweet spot; VRR (G-Sync/FreeSync) smooths out drops during heavy effects.

Extremely light — Cold War runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.

Storyline

It's 1986, and the United States and the Soviet Union are taking the first tentative steps toward perestroika - a sense of friendship and cooperation that has not existed between the two world superpowers for decades. It appears that the Cold War might actually be over. Unfortunately, not everyone thinks that glasnost is a good thing. A fundamentalist faction within the Soviet government doesn't want the Cold War to thaw - they want it to heat up. Led by Barinsky, the radical head of the KGB, a group of separatists is making a last, desperate attempt to return the USSR to the control of the hard-line Communist regime by framing an American in a plot to assassinate the Soviet president and set off a chain of events that could very well lead to World War III. Matthew Carter, a hard-nosed American journalist following a tip from an informant, has just arrived in Moscow to cover a story. He is hoping that this assignment will lead to the story of a lifetime. Instead, it leads him into the thick of Barinsky's plot. Now, instead of vying for a Pulitzer Prize, Carter is fighting to clear his name, get to the bottom of Barinsky's sinister plan, and - hopefully - get out of the Soviet Union alive.
