About

Contrast, released in 2013, is an adventure puzzle/platform game that stands out with its unique gameplay mechanic of switching between 3D environments and a 2D shadow realm. Set in a dreamlike 1920s world inspired by performance art, vaudeville, and film noir, the game immerses players in a visually compelling landscape accompanied by a sultry jazz backdrop. Its intriguing blend of narrative and artistic design makes Contrast a notable title in the indie gaming scene.

For optimal performance in Contrast, players do not need high-end hardware, making it accessible to a broad audience. A minimum entry-level GPU with a benchmark score of around 300 can run the game smoothly, enabling decent FPS even on lower graphics settings. With only 2 GB of RAM required, players can expect good performance from budget-friendly PCs, as the game is not demanding and can deliver an engaging experience without the need for cutting-edge technology.

Should you dive into Contrast? While it has a mixed rating of 58/100, the game appeals to those who appreciate innovative gameplay and artistic storytelling, particularly within the adventure and indie genres. If you enjoy puzzle-based mechanics and unique visual styles, Contrast may still be worth experiencing.

Performance profile

Released in November 2013, Contrast sits in the DirectX 11 generation. Comfortable on any modern mid-range GPU at 1440p; even an RTX 3050 or RX 6600 typically delivers 4K60 at High settings.

Contrast is a narrative-driven experience — a rock-solid 60 FPS is plenty. Prioritise resolution and image quality (AA, anisotropic filtering) over chasing high-refresh framerates.

Extremely light — Contrast runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.

Storyline

In this universe, where the boundaries between showmanship, magic, intrigue and deception are blurred, you play Dawn, the imaginary friend of a young girl named Didi. You have the power to slip from the 3D dreamscape into the parallel 2D shadow world bound to it. Cast light on a shadowy story by manipulating light sources in the 3D world to distort, enlarge or stretch the 2D shadow world. Manipulating and shifting between light and shadow will be the key elements that you will need to use to solve our world of shadow-based puzzles and help progress Didi's story!
