About

DreadOut (2014) is a third-person survival horror adventure that puts you in the shoes of Linda, a high school student navigating an abandoned town armed only with a smartphone camera. This indie title blends supernatural encounters with puzzle-solving mechanics, where your smartphone becomes a tool for both combat and investigation. The atmospheric gameplay emphasizes exploration and mystery-solving rather than action-heavy sequences.

From a performance standpoint, DreadOut is highly accessible and doesn't demand cutting-edge hardware. It runs smoothly on entry-level GPUs with benchmark scores around 303, making it ideal for budget gaming PCs or older systems. You'll easily maintain solid FPS rates on minimal graphics settings, and even modest configurations will handle this game comfortably without performance concerns.

With a 34/100 rating, DreadOut struggles with execution despite its intriguing premise. Unless you're specifically interested in indie horror games or retro-style survival titles, there are better-reviewed alternatives worth your time. It's a niche pick for dedicated genre fans rather than a must-play experience.

Performance profile

Released in May 2014, DreadOut sits in the DirectX 11 generation. Comfortable on any modern mid-range GPU at 1440p; even an RTX 3050 or RX 6600 typically delivers 4K60 at High settings.

DreadOut is a narrative-driven experience — a rock-solid 60 FPS is plenty. Prioritise resolution and image quality (AA, anisotropic filtering) over chasing high-refresh framerates.

Extremely light — DreadOut runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.

Storyline

When a group of high school students went astray from a field trip, they came across something totally unexpected. A town long forgotten trapped in a peaceful state of slumber. What they did not realize was what lurks within. And what seemed like an innocent stroll turns into disaster as the secluded town reveals its dark and terrible secrets. The presence of sinister forces from beyond their realm of existence. It all comes down to Linda. She will experience stirrings of unfamiliar powers, emerging from within herself. These new found abilities might just be the only way she can save her own life and those of her friends.
