About
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, released in 2001, is a highly regarded sequel that blends adventure, shooter, and tactical gameplay. Players take on the roles of Solid Snake and Raiden, navigating complex environments while utilizing stealth strategies and an array of gadgets to outsmart enemies. The game's cover mechanics enhanced the gameplay experience, allowing for deeper strategic options when engaging with guards and formidable bosses.
For those interested in benchmarking the game's performance on PC, Metal Gear Solid 2 is considered quite accessible. With a minimum GPU requirement of around 9638 points, even entry-level GPUs can provide satisfactory performance at moderate graphics settings. Pairing this with a minimum CPU score of approximately 5237 and 8 GB of RAM ensures smoother gameplay and higher FPS, making it suitable for most modern gaming rigs.
Given its solid rating of 89/100 and its innovative gameplay design, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is a must-play for fans of the action-adventure genre. Whether you are revisiting this classic or experiencing it for the first time, the engaging story and challenging mechanics make it a worthy addition to any gaming library.
Performance profile
Released in November 2001, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty comes from the DirectX 9 era. Even the cheapest modern discrete GPU crushes it at maxed-out settings; the only real bottleneck today is CPU single-thread speed on older titles that were never multi-threaded.
As a strategy title, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is typically CPU-bound rather than GPU-bound — single-thread CPU performance dictates framerate during large-scale battles, end-game saves and late-game AI turns. A fast modern 6-core will help more than a GPU upgrade.
Mid-range territory. An RTX 3060 or RX 6700 XT delivers 60 FPS at 1080p High in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. For 1440p Ultra you'll want an RTX 4060 Ti / RX 7700 XT; 4K Ultra needs an RTX 4070 Ti or faster.
Storyline
Two years after the events of the Shadow Moses Incident, Solid Snake and Otacon, working as Philanthropy, receive intelligence of a new type of Metal Gear being transported through the Hudson River. As Snake boards the tanker, it's seized by a group of Russian mercenaries led by Revolver Ocelot, intent on stealing the new Metal Gear. Fast-forward to the year 2009: the player takes control of Raiden, a rookie agent operating under the order of the Colonel, apparently a member of a reformed Foxhound unit. His initial assignment is to infiltrate the offshore clean-up facility Big Shell and rescue the President of the United States of America, who was kidnapped by members of a terrorist organization known as Sons of Liberty. However, the matters become increasingly complicated as almost everyone Raiden communicates with appears to have things to hide, and it is hard to tell a friend from foe...
