About
Out of Order, released in 2003, is a charming freeware 2D point-and-click adventure game developed by British indie developer Tim Furnish. It features a comedic science fiction narrative that immerses players in a whimsical world filled with quirky characters and imaginative puzzles. This engaging gameplay and unique storyline have made it a notable entry in the indie game scene, appealing to both adventure enthusiasts and casual gamers alike.
When it comes to PC performance, Out of Order is quite accessible, requiring only an entry-level GPU with a minimum score of around 600 for optimal gameplay. With just 2 GB of RAM needed, players can enjoy solid FPS on basic setups. For smooth performance, even integrated graphics can handle the game, so options like Intel UHD or low-end dedicated GPUs will deliver satisfactory graphics settings without demanding high-end hardware.
Should you play Out of Order? If you appreciate whimsical storytelling and point-and-click adventures, this game is definitely worth your time. Its humorous content and light-hearted gameplay provide a delightful experience that makes it a standout in the adventure genre.
Performance profile
Released in March 2003, Out of Order comes from the DirectX 9 era. Even the cheapest modern discrete GPU crushes it at maxed-out settings; the only real bottleneck today is CPU single-thread speed on older titles that were never multi-threaded.
As a strategy title, Out of Order is typically CPU-bound rather than GPU-bound — single-thread CPU performance dictates framerate during large-scale battles, end-game saves and late-game AI turns. A fast modern 6-core will help more than a GPU upgrade.
Extremely light — Out of Order runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.
Storyline
The game's protagonist is Hurford Schlitzting, who is woken in the night by a thunderstorm. Hurford discovers that he, along with his entire bedroom, have been transported to a place called "The Town," set in an alternate future inhabited by aliens. He navigates the environment in his bathrobe and teddy bear slippers in an attempt to resolve the mystery of why he has been kidnapped.
