About

Retrovirus, released in 2013, is an action indie game that immerses players in a captivating six degrees of freedom shooter experience. Set within the intricate depths of a computer, players embark on a mission to find and eradicate an invasive virus, blending fast-paced action with a unique digital environment. Its intriguing gameplay and distinct theme contribute to its cult following, making it a notable title in the indie gaming space.

When it comes to PC performance, Retrovirus is relatively accessible, with modest hardware requirements that allow it to run on a wide range of systems. The minimum GPU requirement is an entry-level GPU with a benchmark score of around 292, which means players can expect decent FPS even on budget rigs. To achieve smoother gameplay and improved graphics settings, a mid-tier GPU is recommended for a more enjoyable experience without pushing the limits of performance.

Should you play Retrovirus? With a rating of 60/100, it may not appeal to everyone, but its unique genre and gameplay mechanics make it worth trying for fans of indie shooters. If you're looking for a different kind of gaming experience and enjoy the exploration of unconventional settings, Retrovirus could be a fun addition to your library.

Performance profile

Released in January 2013, Retrovirus sits in the DirectX 11 generation. Comfortable on any modern mid-range GPU at 1440p; even an RTX 3050 or RX 6600 typically delivers 4K60 at High settings.

Action titles like Retrovirus reward high framerates for visual clarity during combat. A mid-range modern GPU at 1440p 60–120 FPS is the practical sweet spot; VRR (G-Sync/FreeSync) smooths out drops during heavy effects.

Extremely light — Retrovirus runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.

Storyline

Players take command of an antivirus program, armed with the tools necessary to erase the virus’ very existence from the system. Movement and exploration are core to the gameplay, and players are encouraged to adapt to the demands of a world where free flight is the norm. Of course, the virus is armed to fight back, and first person shooter combat features heavily as players test their level of comfort with movement within the machine environment. Each player is able to customize their antivirus program with different plugins, allowing for a variety of approaches to a given situation. The Retrovirus single player campaign focuses on the core story of the game, with the player’s goal being the eradication of the virus and the discovery of its origins. To defeat the virus, the player must solve puzzles, engage in dogfight-style combat, and explore the depths of the virtual world. Retrovirus also features multi-player modes, designed to engage players’ social and competitive sides. Co-operative multi-player allows players to complete the campaign of the game with a friend, teaming up to restore the system to working order. Competitive multi-player will focus on the core of the six degrees of freedom shooter, hearkening back to the action-oriented shooters of the late 90’s and early 00’s.
