About

"Roots of Insanity," released in 2017, is a survival horror game that immerses players in the tense world of Riley McClein, a doctor grappling with both his epileptic seizures and the horrors of the August Valentine Hospital. The game utilizes the Unreal Engine to deliver a unique blend of first-person and third-person gameplay mechanics, allowing for a gripping experience filled with action and adventure undertones. Its combination of narrative depth and psychological tension sets it apart in the indie gaming landscape.

When considering PC performance for "Roots of Insanity," players can expect the game to be relatively accessible. With a minimum GPU requirement of an entry-level graphics card scoring around 1477 and a CPU score of approximately 2218, users with basic setups should achieve decent FPS, particularly with the right graphics settings. It's advisable to aim for a configuration with at least 8 GB of RAM to ensure smooth performance through the game's intense sequences and intricate environments.

Despite its mixed rating of 50/100, "Roots of Insanity" has a distinct appeal for fans of the action and horror genres. If you enjoy indie titles that prioritize narrative and atmospheric tension, this game might still be worth exploring, especially for those looking to benchmark their PC's performance in survival horror settings.

Performance profile

April 2017 release. Roots of Insanity was built around the GTX 10-series / RX Vega era. Current-gen mid-range cards (RTX 4060 / RX 7600) are overkill at 1080p and handle 1440p Ultra comfortably.

Roots of Insanity is a narrative-driven experience — a rock-solid 60 FPS is plenty. Prioritise resolution and image quality (AA, anisotropic filtering) over chasing high-refresh framerates.

Extremely light — Roots of Insanity runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.

Storyline

In Roots of Insanity, we witness an ordinary day of Dr. Riley of the August Valentine Hospital by his own eyes. Dr. Riley, who is an epilepsy patient, has to take his medicine regularly to prevent possible attacks caused by the illness. In the scene that we get into the game, Dr. Riley is at his desk, sitting on a chair. Startled by a screaming woman outside, Riley has a minor attack for not being able to find his medicine. After that, he leaves his room to both find the source of the scream and get some medicine but he finds himself in a messy chaos. In this situation, he needs to find the medicine as soon as possible and help the people at the hospital, for of course; if he can get rid of the ones in his way…
