About
Scaler (2004) is a colorful 3D platformer that follows young Bobby Jenkins as he uncovers a sinister plot involving mutated lizards threatening world domination. The game combines traditional platforming mechanics with puzzle-solving and exploration across vibrant, imaginative environments. With its striking visual style and creative level design, Scaler earned a well-deserved 99/100 rating and has since become recognized as a hidden gem among fans of classic 3D platformers.
Running Scaler on modern hardware is straightforward given its age and modest requirements. Even integrated graphics or entry-level GPUs will handle this game comfortably at high FPS, making it an excellent choice for casual gaming or retro benchmarking comparisons. You'll easily achieve 60+ FPS on any dedicated graphics card from the last decade, with performance scaling smoothly across various graphics settings. The game's optimization means older systems can also run it without issue, making performance concerns virtually non-existent.
If you appreciate charming 3D platformers with personality and solid design, Scaler deserves a place in your library. Its combination of tight controls, creative visuals, and engaging story makes it well worth playing despite its age.
Performance profile
Released in October 2004, Scaler comes from the DirectX 9 era. Even the cheapest modern discrete GPU crushes it at maxed-out settings; the only real bottleneck today is CPU single-thread speed on older titles that were never multi-threaded.
Scaler is a narrative-driven experience — a rock-solid 60 FPS is plenty. Prioritise resolution and image quality (AA, anisotropic filtering) over chasing high-refresh framerates.
Mid-range territory. An RTX 3060 or RX 6700 XT delivers 60 FPS at 1080p High in Scaler. For 1440p Ultra you'll want an RTX 4060 Ti / RX 7700 XT; 4K Ultra needs an RTX 4070 Ti or faster.
Storyline
You play as Bobby "Scaler" Jenkins, a young boy who discovers that his neighbor is actually a reptilian villain from another dimension. After being captured and transported to this alien dimension, Bobby is transformed into a lizard-like being, giving him unique abilities. He must use these abilities to fight off the evil reptilian army, rescue native creatures, and stop the villain's plans to take over the Earth.
