About

Silent Hill 4: The Room, released in 2004, is the fourth installment in the iconic Silent Hill survival horror series. Known for its gripping atmosphere and psychological horror elements, it combines exploration and puzzle-solving with intense action moments. The game introduces a first-person mode when the player is in the protagonist's apartment, adding a unique twist to the traditional third-person gameplay, elevating the player's sense of tension and unease.

In terms of PC performance, Silent Hill 4 is quite accessible and can run smoothly on entry-level GPUs with a minimum score of around 300. Players can expect decent FPS even on lower-end hardware, making it a great choice for gamers with budget configurations. Optimal performance is achievable on mid-tier GPUs, allowing users to enjoy higher graphics settings without sacrificing frame rates. Benchmarking with a range of systems confirms that the game is not particularly demanding, offering a smooth experience for its fans.

Should you play Silent Hill 4: The Room? With a score of 76/100, this game is highly regarded for its story and atmospheric depth within the adventure genre. If you appreciate narrative-driven horror games that keep you guessing, this title is worth your time, especially for those who enjoy exploring chilling environments with suspenseful gameplay.

Performance profile

Released in June 2004, Silent Hill 4: The Room comes from the DirectX 9 era. Even the cheapest modern discrete GPU crushes it at maxed-out settings; the only real bottleneck today is CPU single-thread speed on older titles that were never multi-threaded.

Silent Hill 4: The Room is a narrative-driven experience — a rock-solid 60 FPS is plenty. Prioritise resolution and image quality (AA, anisotropic filtering) over chasing high-refresh framerates.

Extremely light — Silent Hill 4: The Room runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.

Storyline

Henry Townshend is living in South Ashfield, a city that's half a day's drive away from Silent Hill. He is content with his life, living in the South Ashfield Heights apartments. However, one day he finds himself mysteriously locked in his own apartment, Room 302. Along with experiencing strange and nightmarish dreams, he cannot escape through either the windows or his front door, which has been chained shut from the inside. No one, not even people standing directly outside of it, can hear him when he pounds on the door and cries for help. Henry explores his apartment, trying to figure out what is happening, when he spots a giant hole in the wall of his bathroom. Henry goes through the hole, only to find a portal which leads him to alternate dimensions.
