About

Super Mario World launched on the SNES in 1990 and stands as a landmark 2D platformer that defined the genre for generations. The game introduces expanded movement mechanics, new power-ups, and a less linear world map that gave players more freedom than previous entries in the franchise. Its combination of tight controls, inventive level design, and charming art direction earned it a 92/100 rating and cemented its place as one of gaming's finest platformers.

Running Super Mario World through emulation on modern PC hardware is extremely accessible, requiring minimal GPU resources compared to contemporary titles. Even integrated graphics from budget processors will handle this game at high FPS with no performance concerns whatsoever. For benchmark purposes, you're looking at thousands of FPS on any dedicated GPU, making this more of a test of emulator efficiency than actual graphics performance. Most players will want to focus on graphics settings within their emulator for visual enhancements rather than worrying about frame rate stability.

If you appreciate classic platformers or want to experience gaming history, Super Mario World absolutely deserves your time. Its influence on game design remains evident today, and the gameplay holds up remarkably well even by modern standards.

Performance profile

Released in November 1990, Super Mario World predates modern GPU acceleration as we know it today. It runs effortlessly on virtually any current hardware, including integrated graphics and entry-level laptops — framerate is limited by the engine, not the GPU.

Super Mario World is a narrative-driven experience — a rock-solid 60 FPS is plenty. Prioritise resolution and image quality (AA, anisotropic filtering) over chasing high-refresh framerates.

Storyline

Mario is having a vacation in Dinosaur Land when he learns that Princess Peach Toadstool has been kidnapped by the evil King Koopa Bowser. When Mario starts searching for her he finds a giant egg with a dinosaur named Yoshi hatching out of it. Yoshi tells Mario that his fellow dinosaurs have been imprisoned in eggs by Bowser's underlings. The intrepid plumber has to travel to their castles, rescue the dinosaurs, and eventually face King Koopa himself, forcing him to release the princess.
