About

Total War: Three Kingdoms (2019) stands as the first major entry in the acclaimed Total War series set in ancient China, blending turn-based empire management with large-scale real-time tactical battles. The game combines strategic conquest and character-driven storytelling against a backdrop of legendary heroes and historical conflict, making it a notable evolution for the franchise that appeals to both strategy enthusiasts and action-oriented players.

The game remains reasonably accessible for most gaming PCs, with entry-level GPUs meeting minimum requirements around the 2533 performance score mark. While you'll need at least 4GB of RAM and a capable GPU to maintain solid FPS at higher resolutions and graphics settings, the benchmark performance scales well across different hardware tiers. Modern mid-range GPUs will comfortably deliver 60+ FPS at 1080p with quality settings enabled, making it an excellent benchmark title for testing real-time strategy performance.

With a strong 80/100 rating, Total War: Three Kingdoms is absolutely worth playing if you enjoy strategy games with meaningful combat systems. The combination of deep campaign mechanics and engaging real-time battles creates a compelling experience that justifies the performance investment required.

Performance profile

May 2019 release. Total War: Three Kingdoms was built around the GTX 10-series / RX Vega era. Current-gen mid-range cards (RTX 4060 / RX 7600) are overkill at 1080p and handle 1440p Ultra comfortably.

As a strategy title, Total War: Three Kingdoms is typically CPU-bound rather than GPU-bound — single-thread CPU performance dictates framerate during large-scale battles, end-game saves and late-game AI turns. A fast modern 6-core will help more than a GPU upgrade.

Entry-level hardware target. A GTX 1650 or RX 6500 XT reaches 60 FPS at 1080p Medium in Total War: Three Kingdoms; an RTX 4060 comfortably sustains 1440p Ultra. 4K Ultra 60 FPS needs an RTX 4070 or better.

Storyline

The year is 190CE. China is in turmoil. The Han Dynasty crumbles before the child-emperor. He is but a figurehead; a mere puppet for the tyrant warlord Dong Zhuo. It is a brutal and oppressive regime, and as Dong Zhuo’s power grows, the empire slips further into the cauldron of anarchy. But hope yet blossoms. Three heroes, sworn to brotherhood in the face of tyranny, rally support for the trials ahead. Scenting opportunity, warlords from China’s great families follow suit, forming a fragile coalition in a bid to challenge Dong Zhuo’s remorseless rule. Will they triumph against the tyrant, or will personal ambition shatter their already crumbling alliance and drive them to supremacy? The crucible fizzes. Allegiances shift. The fires of conflict stoke opportunity. Only one thing is certain: the very future of China will be shaped by its champions.
