About
"Way of the Red," released in 2016, is an engaging 2D action platformer that blends elements from genres like adventure and indie gaming. With its fluid movement, satisfying combat mechanics, and a compelling story, players can expect a gameplay experience reminiscent of a modern Ninja Gaiden mixed with the playful chaos of Smash Bros. The game invites players to explore four vast zones filled with unique environments, characters, and secrets, making every playthrough an exciting venture.
In terms of performance, "Way of the Red" is quite accessible for most PC gamers. The minimum GPU requirement is an entry-level graphics card with a score around 400, which means even budget systems can run the game effectively. Players can enjoy stable FPS across various graphics settings, making it ideal for those who want a smooth experience without the need for high-end hardware. A GPU from the lower mid-tier, such as NVIDIA's GTX 750 or AMD's Radeon R7 250, should suffice to handle the game well.
Should you play "Way of the Red"? With a score of 70/100 and its unique mix of genres, the game is worth trying, especially for fans of platformers and action-adventure titles. Its combination of engaging gameplay and accessible performance makes it an inviting choice for both casual gamers and genre enthusiasts.
Performance profile
Released in November 2016, Way of the Red sits in the DirectX 11 generation. Comfortable on any modern mid-range GPU at 1440p; even an RTX 3050 or RX 6600 typically delivers 4K60 at High settings.
Way of the Red is a narrative-driven experience — a rock-solid 60 FPS is plenty. Prioritise resolution and image quality (AA, anisotropic filtering) over chasing high-refresh framerates.
Extremely light — Way of the Red runs at 60 FPS 1080p on any integrated GPU (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics) or a decade-old discrete card like the GTX 1050. A current-gen RTX 4060 pushes 4K Ultra without effort.
Storyline
You take the role of a downtrodden swordsman of a nearly extinct race known as the birdmen. Years of training and battle leave you unfulfilled and without purpose, so one day, you leave home to discover the fate of your lost childhood love. Your quest for perspective is abruptly cut short when you are shot from the sky by a group of human warriors who specialize in trapping birdmen for use as slaves. You wake up with your wings clipped and sword confiscated, in a land ruled by a sadistic king who posesses a strange obsession with harvesting the mysterious "red seeds". You come to realize that the fate of the one you've been searching for is intertwined with the king's nefarious ambitions. In order to meet her again, you must get your hands on a sword, escape enslavement, and carve a path of blood to the ominous Spire City.
